“Hi, I’m Bernie. I run a home-based wildlife sanctuary in western New York. Every day, I pour my heart into its mission. Since I was young, I have been helping care for animals in need. One of my earliest memories was rescuing an Eastern Screech Owl that had fallen from a nest when I was 4 years old. Since then, I have loved helping, teaching about, and studying wildlife. After many years of experience in wildlife rehabilitation, I obtained my federal and NY state wildlife rehabilitation and raptor licenses that allow me to help rehabilitate and care for raptors and other animals in need. I started to get very busy on my own, and in 2019 decided to start a non-profit, whose mission is to further the care of raptors with a group of others, hence, the beginning of WNY Raptor and Wildlife Care, Inc. At the moment, we are a home-based facility, with the intention of expanding. Since starting with one mews, we have currently raised enough money to expand up to nine! These enclosures provide sanctuary for from red-tailed hawks, great horned owls, turkey vultures, barn owls, barred owls, peregrine falcons and many others throughout the year. We are growing and have several other rehabilitators who now belong to the group!"
Our mission has three parts:
1. Provide sanctuary and wildlife rehabilitation for injured and orphaned animals, particularly birds of prey.
2. Educate the public on wildlife conservation.
3. Further scientific knowledge on research, especially post-release success in raptors.
WNY RAPTOR AND WILDLIFE CARE INC. started as a passion project to give a voice to wildlife in need of care. We care immensely about the wildlife that we take in, and dedicate much time, resources, and effort to each animal in hopes that they can be released back to the wild where they belong!
What kinds of animals can you help with?
We will aid in the rescue of birds of prey. Sometimes people will find these birds on the sides of roadways injured by vehicles, or simply out when they are hiking. Feel free to call or text photos immediately to (716) 863-7603 for assistance.
What are donations used for?
Since we are a non-profit all donations are tax-deductible and go to help with animal feed, care, medications, veterinary appointments, and supplies. We have no government funding and rely on donations and grants to support our animals. Did you know animals that are recovering need to feed more than the average animal-- they need energy to repair the injuries that they have. Donations to the cause really help support them!
What do you do if you find an injured animal?
You can go to the NYS DEC website here and search your county and type of animal found here: https://www.dec.ny.gov/cfmx/extapps/sls_searches/index.cfm?p=live_rehab
We can also help you as well!

WNY Raptor and Wildlife Care, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to wildlife rehabilitation and release of injured raptors (hawks, owls, falcons) and other wildlife. We raise awareness about the importance of wildlife and have multiple research projects to further scientific knowledge about wildlife.
